Ambala is one of the busiest junctions in north India. NH-44 runs through it, the railway junction connects it to almost everywhere, and the twin towns of Ambala City and Ambala Cantt together make a large, busy population. For a neurosurgical opinion, families here have often had to travel to Chandigarh or further.
Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, now consults in Ambala Cantt every Saturday, and the rest of the week at his two OPDs in Panchkula. That means most first visits and follow-ups can happen close to home.
The Ambala OPD runs every Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM at C Lal Hospital, Jagadhri Road, Ambala Cantt. It is a good place to show MRI or CT reports, get an opinion on whether surgery is needed, and come back for follow-up after treatment. Timings can change around holidays, so please call +91-9780703819 before you set out.
If a patient needs admission, detailed tests or an operation, this is planned at Paras Health - Panchkula, Sector 22, where the operation theatres and neuro ICU are.
NH-44 and the Ambala–Jagadhri and Ambala–Hisar roads carry heavy traffic, and head and spine injuries from accidents are frequent. After any head injury, watch for drowsiness, repeated vomiting, a fit, weakness or confusion, and go to the nearest emergency department straight away if these appear. More on this is on the head injury and spine trauma page.
Slip disc, sciatica, neck pain and narrowing of the spinal canal are the most common reasons for a visit. Most are treated without an operation. A separate page covers this for Ambala residents: spine surgeon near Ambala.
High BP and diabetes are common, and so are strokes. A face that droops, an arm that suddenly goes weak, or slurred speech means the patient must reach a hospital that can treat stroke as quickly as possible. Some patients need clot-dissolving medicine or a clot removal procedure within hours. See stroke treatment.
Headaches that keep getting worse, a first fit in an adult, or a change in vision or personality need an MRI. If a tumour is found, the scan can be reviewed at the Saturday OPD before any decision is made.
Ambala Cantt to Panchkula is around 45 km. Most people take NH-44 towards Zirakpur and then the Zirakpur–Panchkula road, roughly an hour's drive if traffic is moving. Trains to Chandigarh station are another option, followed by a short taxi ride. For patients who cannot sit comfortably or have weakness, travelling by car with a family member is safer than a bus.
Many Ambala households include grandparents who live with the family, and they are the ones most likely to have spinal canal narrowing, slow brain bleeds after a fall, or a stroke. Signs that deserve a doctor's visit include walking that has become slow and shuffling, new forgetfulness or confusion after a recent fall, frequent falls, or hands that have become clumsy. These are often blamed on age. Some of them are very treatable once the cause is found, so it is worth bringing them to the Saturday OPD rather than waiting.
