Neurosurgeon near Kalka and Pinjore – Panchkula OPD

Part of Panchkula District, a Short Drive Away

Kalka and Pinjore are part of Panchkula district, strung along the highway that climbs towards Shimla. Pinjore is known for its Mughal-era Yadavindra Gardens; Kalka for its railway station, where the toy train to Shimla begins. For a neurosurgical opinion, people here do not need to travel far at all.

Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, sees patients from Kalka, Pinjore, Surajpur and the nearby villages at Advaith Brain & Spine Clinic, Sector 21, and Paras Health - Panchkula, Sector 22, usually 25 to 40 minutes away by road.

A Town with Many Older Residents

Pinjore and Kalka have many retired families, including former employees of HMT and the railways, and ex-servicemen. Spine problems in older people look a little different from those in younger patients, and they often get dismissed as "just age".

Spinal canal stenosis

The classic story: the legs feel heavy, numb or painful after walking a short distance, and the person has to stop and sit or bend forward before carrying on. Bending over a shopping trolley may feel easier than standing straight. This is narrowing of the spinal canal, and it can be treated. Many people improve with medicines and physiotherapy; others benefit from a decompression operation to free the nerves. See spine surgery options.

Osteoporotic fractures

Thin bones can crack with a minor fall or even a strong cough. Sudden back pain in an older woman after a small jerk should be checked with an X-ray. Bone strength treatment is as important as treating the pain.

Falls and head injuries

A fall at home, in the bathroom or on the gardens' uneven paths can cause a head injury. In older people on aspirin or other blood thinners, a slow bleed under the skull (chronic subdural haematoma) can appear days or weeks later as confusion, drowsiness, weakness or frequent falls. It is often treated with a small burr-hole operation. Learn more on the head injury page.

Simple Steps to Prevent Falls at Home

  • Grab bars and a non-slip mat in the bathroom.
  • A night light on the way to the toilet.
  • Remove loose rugs and wires from walking areas.
  • Get eyesight checked and review medicines that cause dizziness.
  • Use a walking stick if balance is uncertain; it is a tool, not a sign of weakness.

Younger Patients Too

Highway accidents near the Kalka and Parwanoo stretch, and factory work in the Pinjore industrial area and nearby Baddi, bring younger patients with slip disc, neck pain and injuries. Most disc problems settle without surgery; the slip disc treatment page explains when an operation is considered.

Getting to the OPD

From Pinjore, the drive along the highway to Sector 21 or Sector 22 usually takes around 25 to 30 minutes; from Kalka, a little longer. The evening clinic at Sector 21 (5 to 7 PM) suits family members who want to come along after work. For older patients, bring the medicine strips, not just the names, so nothing is missed.

When Back Pain Needs a Scan

Not every backache needs an MRI. Most episodes in younger and middle-aged people settle in a few weeks. A scan is usually advised when pain spreads down the leg with numbness or weakness, when there is a history of cancer, fever or weight loss, when pain started after a fall in someone with thin bones, or when walking distance keeps shrinking. If you live in Pinjore or Kalka and are unsure whether a scan is needed, bring any X-rays you already have to the first visit; the decision can be made after examining you.
